- President Obama lifted eight years of restriction on embryonic stem cell research last spring.
- Now many new researchers are applying for the ability to do research on Stem Cells.
- Another 250 stem cell lines can now be applied for.
- All the researchers are excited that the NIH will be providing major funding for them.
- Now the 21 million dollars in grants can be used immediately.
This is exciting because now the work can begin on projects that could eventually repair cancerous damage and build brain cells and stop Parkinson's Disease or other illnesses. This will allow money to go to an awesome use for the good of all the people in America! This relates to our stem cell unit, for it means that more in depth research can officially begin. I didn't know before that so much money had been put aside for usage on stem cells, but wasn't yet allowed to be used. I also learned from this article that there are many types of medical grant systems used by state and federal government. There was already the CIRM (California institute for Regenerative Medicine), a big donor for hospitals and research grants. This article also shows the change instituted by Barack Obama in relation to the Bush administration.
